What is Esports Betting?
Esports betting is wagering money on the outcomes of professional video game competitions. Just like you might bet on football or basketball, you can bet on Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Valorant, and many other competitive games.
The esports betting market has exploded in recent years. Major tournaments like The International (Dota 2), CS2 Majors, and the League of Legends World Championship attract millions of viewers and bettors worldwide. The global esports betting market is now worth billions annually.
Unlike traditional sports, esports offers year-round action with matches happening daily. The digital nature means comprehensive statistics are available, and knowledgeable fans can leverage their game understanding for an edge.

How Odds Work
Understanding odds is fundamental to betting. Odds represent both the probability of an outcome and how much you'll win. There are three common formats: Decimal, Fractional, and American (Moneyline).
Decimal Odds (Most Common in Esports)
Decimal odds show your total return for every $1 wagered, including your stake. They're the easiest to understand and most commonly used in esports betting.
| Decimal | Fractional | American | Implied Probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 1/2 | -200 | 66.7% |
| 2.00 | 1/1 (evens) | +100 | 50% |
| 2.50 | 3/2 | +150 | 40% |
| 3.00 | 2/1 | +200 | 33.3% |
| 5.00 | 4/1 | +400 | 20% |
Understanding Implied Probability
Every set of odds implies a probability. If you think the true probability is higher than what the odds suggest, you have a value bet.
A sportsbook offers Team A at 2.50 odds (40% implied probability). Through your research, you estimate Team A has a 50% chance to win. Since 50% > 40%, this is a value bet. Over time, betting on positive expected value opportunities leads to profit.
Types of Bets
Match Winner (Moneyline)
The simplest bet: pick which team will win the match. No spreads or handicapsโjust straight-up who wins. This is where most beginners start.
Map/Game Winner
In esports, matches are often best-of-3 or best-of-5. You can bet on individual map/game winners, which is useful when you think an underdog has a strong specific map.
Handicap (Spread) Betting
When one team is heavily favored, handicap betting evens the odds. A -1.5 map handicap means the favorite must win 2-0 for your bet to pay out. A +1.5 handicap means the underdog can lose 1-2 and you still win.
Over/Under (Totals)
Bet on whether the total maps, rounds, or in-game events exceed or fall short of a specified number. "Over 2.5 maps" wins if the match goes to 3 maps.
Prop Bets
Proposition bets cover specific in-game events: first blood, first tower, total kills, pistol round winners, and more. These require deeper game knowledge but offer edge opportunities.
Outright/Futures
Bet on tournament winners before or during an event. Higher risk but potentially massive returns if you identify an undervalued team early.
Bankroll Management
Your bankroll is the total amount of money you've set aside for betting. Proper management is arguably more important than picking winners. Without it, even profitable bettors can go broke.
The Unit System
A "unit" is typically 1-2% of your total bankroll. Using units instead of dollar amounts keeps your bets proportional to your bankroll size and emotions in check.
Conservative: 1% of bankroll per bet (100 units)
Standard: 2% of bankroll per bet (50 units)
Aggressive: 3-5% of bankroll per bet (20-33 units)
Start conservative. A $1,000 bankroll means $10-20 per bet maximum.
Key Bankroll Rules
- Never bet more than 5% on a single match, no matter how confident
- Never bet money you can't afford to lose
- Track every bet โ use a spreadsheet or betting tracker
- Review monthly โ analyze what's working and what isn't
- Adjust unit size only after your bankroll changes significantly (ยฑ25%)
Research Tips
Knowledge is your edge. The more you understand about the teams, players, and games, the better your predictions will be. Here's where to focus your research:
Team Form & Recent Results
Check the last 10-20 matches. Are they on an upswing or downswing? Did they recently change rosters? Teams often need time to gel after roster changes.
Head-to-Head History
Some teams consistently beat others regardless of overall rankings. Check the H2H record, especially recent meetings with current rosters.
Map Pool Analysis (For CS2/Valorant)
Teams have strong and weak maps. If you know both teams' map pools, you can predict the veto and identify maps where underdogs have real chances.
Meta & Patch Changes
New patches can dramatically shift team strengths. A team dominating the previous patch might struggle in a new meta. Watch for these transitions.
Tournament Context
Is this a must-win match? Are there financial or prestige incentives? Teams play differently in group stages vs. elimination rounds.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Chasing losses โ After a losing streak, resist the urge to make bigger bets to "win it back." Stick to your unit size and trust your process.
-
Betting on your favorite team โ Fan loyalty clouds judgment. Either skip your team's matches or bet against them when the value is there.
-
Ignoring odds value โ A team can be likely to win but still be a bad bet if the odds are too low. Always check if the implied probability is lower than your estimated probability.
-
Betting too many matches โ Quality over quantity. It's okay to skip a day if there's no clear value. Forcing bets leads to losses.
-
Not tracking bets โ Without records, you can't identify leaks in your strategy. Track every bet: date, match, odds, stake, and result.
-
Betting under the influence โ Alcohol and gambling don't mix. Make all betting decisions with a clear head.
Sportsbooks build a margin (the "vig" or "juice") into their odds. On a 50/50 bet, you might see both sides at 1.91 instead of 2.00. This means you need to win more than 50% of your bets just to break even. Long-term profitability requires finding consistent valueโand even then, variance means losses are part of the game.
๐ก๏ธ Responsible Gambling Reminder
Esports betting should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Set limits, take breaks, and never bet more than you can afford to lose. If gambling stops being fun, it's time to stop.
Signs of problem gambling include chasing losses, betting with money meant for bills, lying about gambling, and feeling anxious when not betting. If you recognize these signs, seek help.
