The Birth of Esports
StarCraft: Brood War (1998) essentially created esports in South Korea. Professional leagues, team houses, TV broadcasts, and celebrity players emerged in the early 2000s. Players like BoxeR, Flash, and Jaedong became national heroes.
Wings of Liberty to Legacy of the Void
StarCraft II launched in 2010 with Wings of Liberty, followed by Heart of the Swarm (2013) and Legacy of the Void (2015). Each expansion shifted the meta dramatically. Legacy of the Void increased the starting worker count, accelerating early game aggression.
The Serral Era
In 2018, Finnish Zerg player Serral became the first non-Korean to win a WCS Global Finals, shattering decades of Korean dominance. His precision, creativity, and consistency proved that Western players could compete at the highest level.
